As you may now, in Sansrit, Kalam means "Pen" and Kari means "Art". Putting them together - "Kalamkari". Although the exact proof of origin is not available from the history, many artisans believe that the history of this art dates back before 3000 years. This popular art is still protected and produced in the state of Andra Pradesh. However, considering the slow and expensive process of Pen Kalamkari, the art got adapted and extended into Block Print to meet the demand for this marvelous art. This Block Print Kalamkari art is produced in Pedana and Machilipatnam areas of Andhra Pradesh and is believed that these Kalamkari Block Print fabrics were used by the Mughals during their empire in India. Thanks to the continuous demand and like for this art across the country as well as the world, the Hand-Block Kalamkari is still the bread earner for more than 5000 artisans in the hub.
